Time for soup

ATSA - Quand l'art passe à l'action presents Le Temps d'une soupe for the first time in Gaspé. Le Temps d'une soupe is a relational mechanism in the public space. The work stages spontaneous duets of conversation between strangers on current issues of living together, thanks to an encounter well articulated by attentive "Conversation Masters". The stage is set up outside, like the terrace of a restaurant, where participants are invited to sit down opposite someone they don't know, with a bowl of soup prepared by a local catering team, and chat "le Temps d'une soupe". This privileged, aestheticized exchange opens the way for encounters on an equal footing. It theatricalizes orality and enables us to discuss important issues outside our usual circle, to reach out to others and develop our critical faculties. By generating active involvement and participation with the community, it makes our public spaces more dynamic, intelligent and democratic. The questions do not imply answers, and require no specific knowledge. They can be adapted to any type of audience. The work of art becomes a social project, one that turns the public square into a place where citizens can express themselves.

Held for the first time in 2015, this event has since taken its cauldrons to 8 Montreal boroughs, and then internationally. In all, 43 Temps d'une soupe events have taken place on four continents and in seven languages, from Beirut to Iqaluit, from Ouagadougou to Antananarivo, via Yellowknife and Rennes. This participatory performance enlivens the street, reveals openness to others and offers new spaces for discussion.

In Gaspé this summer, during the Festival Musique du Bout du Monde, passers-by can meet us for a bowl of soup and new acquaintances.
